What is a student visa in Chile?

A student visa in Chile is a temporary residence permit for foreigners interested in settling in Chile to study at educational establishments officially recognized in Chile (by the Ministry of Education).

Tip

It is good to know that the student visa allows students to engage in lawful paid activities for up to 30 hours per week without additional authorization. Yet, studies must remain the primary purpose of the stay, and you must send a copy of your work contract to the immigration service.

Who can apply for a student visa in Chile? Is the student visa right for me?

Foreigners who can apply for a student visa in Chile are those who have an interest in settling in the country to study at educational establishments recognized by Chile. The student visa is for you if you want to relocate to Chile to study a semester, a year, or more in an educational institution recognized by Chile, which means registered by the Ministry of Education.

Who does not qualify for a student visa?

Foreigners who are not students or not studying in an educational establishment recognized by Chile can not apply for a visa student. For example, learning Spanish at a language school for a few hours daily is not accepted. Private lessons or remote learning do not qualify either.

  • being registered as a student in Chile or having a certificate from the Chilean education institution where you will study.
  • proving that you can pay for your expenses during your stay.
  • having a passport valid for at least one year at the date of the application.

Required documents for a student visa in Chile

Documents required for all temporary visas

  • A scanned copy of your passport (only the page with your photo).
  • A background check / certificate of criminal records of your country of origin, apostilled or legalized (mandatory for those over 18 years old).
  • A background check / certificate of criminal records of your country of residence, apostilled or legalized, if you have been residing in the last five years in a country different from your country of origin.

  • A certificate from the educational institution: The document must state that the student participates in an exchange program.
  • A certificate of Student: Issued by the institution where you will study.
  • Some proof of financial support.

To prove financial support for your stay and studies in Chile, you can use one of the following documents:

  • A current work contract (if you are working during your studies).
  • Pension payments.
  • Bank transfers.
  • Money transfers from abroad, among others.

If a third party (a parent, a child, or a spouse) is taking care of your expenses in Chile, you must provide an affidavit signed before a notary by the person who pays for your expenses.

Documents issued abroad must be apostilled or legalized adequately by the Chilean consulate in the country of origin and by the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as stipulated in articles 345/345 bis of the Civil Procedure Code.

Remember, though, that 1) Chile can issue tourist visas for up to 90 days for citizens of many countries, and 2) the application process for temporary residency visas, such as the student visa, takes several months. Therefore, for short training below three months, consider a tourist visa if accepted by the institution.

As serious misconduct can lead to expulsion from the institution, the consequence may be revoking your visa. The National Migration Service can indeed revoke the visa of those who have lost their status as regular students. Working in Chile with a student visa

Yes, but. You can use a student visa to do an internship in a company in Chile if you are registered as a student in a Chilean educational institution and if the internship is less than 30 hours per week. Yet, if the internship agreement is signed between a foreign institution and a Chilean company, then you are not considered a student in Chile. Therefore, you can not apply for a student visa. In that case, you should apply for a work visa or a work permit as a tourist if the internship is short (up to 6 months).

Yes. You can work up to 30 hours per week without being required to obtain a permit. You shall inform the immigration service and send a copy of your work contract. You do not need to change your visa to another category. Working more than 30 hours per week requires you to change the subcategory of your visa to a work visa.

No. You do not have to ask for a specific work permit at the same time as the student visa. If you hold a student visa, you are allowed to work up to 30 hours per week without needing additional authorization. However, you must inform the immigration authority (SERMIG) and submit a copy of your work contract. The work activities should not interfere with your student status nor exceed the maximum of 30 hours per week.

Visa renewal / Permanent residency

Yes. You can switch to a different visa type while residing in Chile on a student visa. However, you must meet the requirements corresponding to the visa category you are applying to.

Yes. It is possible to renew a student visa in Chile when it expires. You must request the renewal of a residence permit at most ninety days before the expiration of the current residence permit.
