What is a Temporary Residency?

The temporary visa, called Residencia Temporal by the Chilean immigration service, is the first type of visa that you need to apply if you want to relocate and live in Chile for a period longer than 90 days. Temporary residency in Chile is a permission granted by the Chile immigration service to foreign individuals who intend to settle in Chile.

Advantages of the temporary residency

  • You can stay one or two years in the country, without having to leave or pay a renewal fee every 90 days like for the tourist visa.
  • You can work legally in Chile.
  • After five years, you receive the right to vote in Chile.

Disadvantages of the temporary residency

  • There is paperwork to do, which can be complicated.
  • You need to demonstrate that you meet the requirements to qualify for this visa.

Who can apply for the Temporary Residency in Chile? Is the Temporary Residency right for me?

If you want to relocate long-term in Chile, then the temporary visa is required. This is the first step to establish yourself in Chile. Obtaining this visa allows you to stay legally in Chile for up to two years. After that first period, you can either renew the visa, or apply for permanent residency in Chile.

If you do not plan to stay for a long-time in Chile, a tourist visa might be a faster option.

Chile temporary visa eligibility

The requirements to apply for a temporary visa in Chile are:

  • meeting the requirement of the subcategory of temporary visa you are applying to. Check the subcategories on this page for details
  • having a passport valid for at least one year at the date of the application.
  • not having been convicted for a crime in Chile or abroad:
    • not having been convicted in Chile.
    • not having been convicted abroad during the last 10 years, for an act that is considered a crime by Chilean law.
    • not having been convicted abroad during the last five years, for an act that is considered a felony by Chilean law.

Required documents for a Temporary Residency in Chile

The required documents vary based on the category of temporary visa you are applying to.

Yet, there is a set of documents that is common to all visas:

  • Copy of your passport (only the page with your photo).
  • Background check / Criminal records certificate of your country of origin, apostilled or legalized.
  • Background check / Criminal records certificate of your country of residence, apostilled or legalized, if you have been residing in the last five years in a country different from your country of origin.

What are the fees to pay for the Permanent Residency in Chile

The standard application fee for a temporary visa or "Residencia Definitiva" for foreigners in general is CLP 118,604. However, if the foreigner is married to a Chilean citizen or is under 18 years old, the application is exempt from payment. The fees for other procedures are as follows: extension of temporary stay or "Prórroga de Permanencia Transitoria" is USD 100, work authorization is 150% of the value of the Temporary Residence for lawful remunerated activities, depending on nationality, and extension for crew member or "Prórroga de Tripulante" is USD 100. The fees for naturalization letter or "Carta de Nacionalización" are CLP 33,026 for foreigners in general, CLP 6,605 for a foreigner married to a Chilean citizen, CLP 6,605 for a foreigner widowed from a Chilean citizen, and CLP 6,605 for a foreigner with a Chilean child.

Temporary visa application process in Chile

  1. Go on the immigration service platform
  2. Click on the section:
    • Solicitud de Residencia Temporal para Extranjeros fuera de Chile, if you are outside Chile
    • Solicitud de Residencia Temporal para Extranjeros dentro de Chile, if you are currently in Chile
  3. Create an account if you do not already have one. There will be a link at the bottom of the page.
  4. Fill the information required and upload the documents
  5. You will receive a confirmation by email that your application has been received
  6. Wait for the reply from the immigration service (see current processing time in the right column of the main page)
  7. Enter Chile with your temporary visa to activate it (unless you apply from Chile).
  8. Book an appointment at the civil registry to get your Chilean ID card.
Warning

If you travel to the country before your Temporary Residence outside Chile is granted, your entry will not be as a resident but as the holder of a tourist visa. If the application for Temporary Residence is approved within Chile, you must leave the country to download the temporary residence visa and re-enter to start the validity of this residence visa.

Warning

Your passport must have at least one year of validity left, when you apply for temporary residency. Remember to renew your passport before starting collecting the rest of the documents, if it is due to expire within less than a year.

Note

All documents issued in any language other than Spanish and English must be accompanied by the respective translation, which must be authorized by the competent body.

Note

Documents issued by private entities must be presented within 30 days from the date of issue. Those issued by public institutions and organizations must be within 60 days from the date of issue, unless a different validity is stated in the document itself.

Shall apply at a consulate or after arriving in Chile?

It is no longer possible to apply for temporary visas at Chilean consulates abroad.

In the past, the application process was the following:

  • come in Chile as a tourist
  • apply for a visa and then stay in Chile during the application

Then, due to a high level of immigration and longer processing time in Chile, Chile opened a channel to apply through consulates.

The 2021 immigration law changed the rules. Now, everyone who want to apply as to do it through their online platform before coming to Chile. The process no longer requires application through a consulate, although you could still be required to go to the consulate to show the original version of the documents, for an interview -if deemed necessary-, or to sign your work contract.

The only exception are foreigners who have family links with Chilean or permanent residents, and pregnant women, who can still apply while in Chile.

Visa application process for family members

The application process for family members shall be performed at the same time as the main visa applicant.

  1. At the end of the main visa application, you will be asked: "Do you want to do a grouped application?"
  2. Select "Yes" to this question and enter the exact number of family members (excluding the principal applicant)
  3. After paying the main visa application, you will be redirected to a screen to enter the first family member details and documents.
  4. If the family member is an adult, you will be required to pay. Once payment is completed, you will be redirected to a screen to enter the next family member details and documents. Repeat this process until you have

If you have not selected "Yes" to the question "Do you want to do a grouped application?", then you have to wait for the main visa applicant to obtain its temporary residency. Once done, the family members can apply for visas. This is not the recommended option, as it significantly delays the applications of the family members.

How long can I stay in Chile?

The first temporary visa can be given for a period of up to two years. Since the last change of the Chilean immigration law in February 2022, most ot the visas are issued for two years. Yet, some specific categories of visa, such as the student visa, the humanitarian visas, the medical visa, can be granted with shorter duration.

Application channels and procedure

Yes. You can apply for a temporary residency visa before coming to Chile. This is actually the most recommended option, and very often the only available option. The application can be made through the online platform of the Chilean immigration service. The consulates of Chile are no longer involved in the temporary visa applcations.

It depends. There are limited categories of temporary visas that you can apply for after arriving in Chile as a tourist: humanitarian visas such as the pregnancy visa, and the family visa. Applications for all other categories of temporary visas must be done before relocating.

No. There is no interview at a consulate, as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the consulates are no longer involved in the visa application process. Yet, you may need to go to a consulate to sign a contract or legalize some documents.

It depends. For most of the categories, there is no cap on the total number of certain visas. Some category, such as the working holiday visa may have cap for certain countries.

The visa is received electronically. The documentation for visa application must be sent via the online platform of the immigration service. Once the visa is approved, you will receive an electronic stamp via email. This stamp contains details such as your date of birth, nationality, and the date and number of the resolution that granted the visa. You can download this electronic stamp by following the instructions sent to your email.

You no longer have to pickup the visa at a consulate. Once you have been granted a temporary residency visa, it will be available online, for you to download. You can download your electronic visa within a period of 120 business days from the date it was granted. Once downloaded, you have 90 consecutive days to enter Chile. Therefore, if you plan to delay your entry, do not download the visa too early or you loose the benefit of the first 120 days. The validity period of the residency visa will be counted from your entry into the country.

You do not stamp the visa on the passport anymore, you just download an electronic file. Once you have downloaded your visa, you have 90 consecutive days to enter Chile from the date it was downloaded. The validity of this visa will be calculated from the date of entry into the country.

No. All the process is online. The immigration service may request physical copies of some documents during the process. You will have to send them by postal mail to their office. Yet, when the visa is approved, there is no documents to show.

There is no need to send someone to pickup the visa anymore, as the process is online. If you need to legalize documents at a consulate, you can send someone on your behalf though.

Family-related residency visa questions

No. The spouse or partner and children of an individual applying for a visa in Chile do not receive the same visa. They can apply as family members (dependientes), together with the principal applicant. They get visas as dependientes, which have the same duration as the main visa, and also allow them to study/work. Therefore, even if not exactly the same visa, the conditions are very similar.

Yes. A partner/spouse is allowed to work in Chile. The law states that dependents are allowed to engage in paid activities, with the exception of minors who are governed by Chilean laws in accordance with the Labor Code.

Yes. There is an age limit for children to apply together with their parents for a visa in Chile. The law allows for children under the age of 18 to apply for a visa together with their parents. Additionally, children between the ages of 18 and 24 who are (or will be) studying in Chile can also apply for a visa. The law also allows for children with disabilities to apply, regardless of their age.

Application fees

The standard fee for a temporary visa varies based on the citizenship of the visa applicant, and the category of visas. See the page about visa fees in Chile for more information.

Yes. There is a flat fee of USD 15 for the partner/spouse of the main visa holder. Contrary to the fee for the main visa holder, the fee for the partner/spouse does not vary based on the citizenship.

It depends. There is no fee for children below 18. For children above 18 relocating as family members, the fee is USD 15.

Application Timing and Updates

You can find the average application time on this page, section "Reply Time", to get an idea of how soon you should send your application.

The online platform of the immigration service has a tracking system, but it only gives you the main step where you visa application currently is. As each step duration can vary quite a lot, it does not give you a very good estimate of how long you still have to wait unfortunately.

You will be notified via email. Once your application begins the analysis process, you will receive an email notification. After your application is accepted, you will automatically receive an email indicating the number and date of the resolution that grants you the visa. The response to your application, including any certificates or official documents, will be sent digitally via email in PDF format with an advanced electronic signature. If your application is incomplete or contains erroneous documentation, you will also be notified by email, and will be given 60 days to provide the missing information or documents.

You can login on the online platform of the immmigration service. There will be an option to update your contact details (Address and Phone Number). The email can not be modified.

No. There is no easy option to cancel a visa application. Yet, you can just let it expires, but either not replying to additional document requests, or not entering Chile with your visa during the allowed period.

No. There is no formal process to cancel your visa if you decide to leave Chile permanently. However, your visa will be expired after a while (usually two years after your first entry with this visa). Not filing a renewal will translate in automatic expiration of your temporary residency visa.

No. No vaccinations or health checks are required for temporary visas. The only exclusion is the working holiday visa that sometimes requires a health certificate.

Yes. Once the visa is approved, you must enter Chile with this visa to activate it if you applied outside Chile. If your application was sent within Chile, the resolution date is the start date of your visa. Once the visa is activated, you must apply for an appointment at the civil register, to apply for the Chilean ID card. This is an important step. Not doing it may prohibit you to apply for a visa renewal, and may even result in your visa been revoked by the immigration service.

Yes. There is an appeal process if your application for a visa is denied. The first step is an administrative appeal, which must be filed within five days of obtaining the rejection notification. The second step is to file a Recurso de Proteccion, which is a court appeal. This second step requires a lawyer. Please note that the immigration service usually issue a pre-rejection notification, and gives you 10 days to reply and provide supporting documents.

No. Owning property in Chile does not directly increase your chances of getting a visa approved. However, owning property could potentially be part of demonstrating financial stability or investment in the country. It may for example allow you to qualify for a rentista visa if the property is rented.
