Chile Citizenship by Investment: Does It Exist?

Searching for a way to buy Chilean citizenship outright? Chile does not sell passports. This page explains why, and lays out the residence-based route that actually leads to citizenship: investor visa, then permanent residency, then standard naturalization.

Does Chile offer citizenship by investment?

No. Chile has no citizenship-by-investment, or "golden passport," program. There is no price at which a passport is directly purchasable, and no fast-track that lets an investment stand in for time spent as a resident. ^[1]

Every route to Chilean nationality by naturalization is governed by DS 5.142/1960 Art. 2. The applicant must already hold permanent residency (Residencia Definitiva) and must have completed the applicable period of continuous residence in Chile. ^[2] The standard route requires five years of continuous residence. Applicants with a qualifying Chilean family tie need only two years. ^[2] Investment does not appear anywhere in that eligibility test.

The confusion is understandable because Chile does actively court foreign investors: the investor visa gives a fast, dedicated residence pathway to people investing USD 500,000 or more, sponsored by InvestChile. ^[3][4] But a residence permit is not citizenship, and holding one does not change or shorten the naturalization requirements that apply to every applicant.

The investor-residency route to naturalization

The investor visa is an ordinary temporary residence permit, not a citizenship product. To qualify, you invest USD 500,000 or more in the production of goods or services in Chile, or hold a qualifying senior-manager or specialist role at a foreign-controlled Chilean company. ^[5] You also need a sponsorship letter (Carta de Patrocinio) from InvestChile. ^[6] The permit is granted for up to 24 months per period. ^[5]

From there, the stages to citizenship are the same ones every other resident goes through, just with one investment-specific detail:

• Permanent residency (Residencia Definitiva): the standard qualifying period is 24 months of temporary residence. The Regional Director may, at their discretion, reduce this to a minimum of 12 months on investment-related grounds. ^[8] This is a discretionary reduction, not an entitlement, and is decided case by case.
• Standard naturalization (Carta de Nacionalización): once you hold permanent residency, naturalization requires five years of continuous residence in Chile, counted from your Temporary Residence Electronic Stamp date, provided you are 18 or older. ^[2][7]

Read that as what it is: a residency route that happens to end in citizenship, not an accelerated or purchasable one. The investment can shorten the wait for permanent residency by up to 12 months, at the Regional Director's discretion. It does not touch the five-year naturalization clock at all.
