What is an investor visa in Chile?
The investor visa in Chile is called Inversionistas y personal relacionado. This visa allows 1) foreign investors and 2) specialized managerial or technical personnel from foreign companies to enter and stay in the country to realize their investment projects.
This visa is sponsored by InvestChile, the Chilean investment agency, an institution that facilitates and supports implementing these projects and post-investment services after their establishment in the country.
Who can apply for an investor visa in Chile?
The investment visa can be obtained by providing the necessary information about the institution or company where the activities are conducted and providing proof of the capital that has entered or will enter Chile. This visa is part of Chile's policy to quickly respond to foreign investors who have chosen Chile as their investment destination.
Foreigners who can apply for an investor visa in Chile include:
- Private investors: Foreign citizens who are looking to invest more than 500,000 (five hundred thousand) USD in Chile.
- Foreign companies: The investment amount is the same (500,000 USD). It can be an investment project (creating a subsidiary to expand the business) or a company purchase.
- Foreign managers or technical specialists of foreign companies: these individuals can also apply for this visa if they 1) are employees of the foreign company and 2) they come to Chile to provide services in a company established in Chile, directly or indirectly controlled by their foreign employer who must have at least 10% of the voting rights of the company's shares or an equivalent percentage of participation in the company's capital or assets.
In all cases, applicants must present a sponsorship Letter issued by the Foreign Investment Promotion Agency (InvestChile) and a document detailing the investment, indicating at least its purpose, amount, and the nature of the functions as appropriate.

Is the investor visa right for me?
The investor visa is the best option for you if:
- you intend to invest USD 500,000 or more in Chile, directly or through a company.
- a foreign company employs you to come to Chile to work at their Chilean branch.
Who does not qualify for an investor visa?
If your investment amount is lower than USD 500,000, it does not qualify for the investor visa. Consider the rentista visa or the work visa, which are the most common alternatives. You may also qualify for other visa categories, depending on your situation.

The requirements to apply for an investor visa in Chile are:
- getting the project approved by the Chilean Investment Agency.
- investment project above 500,000 USD, or a foreign company owning at least 10% of a Chilean company.
- having a business plan/presentation of the investment realized or planned
- having a passport valid for at least one year at the date of the application.

Documents required for all temporary visas
- Copy of your passport (only the page with your photo).
- Background check of your country of origin, apostilled or legalized.
- Background check of your country of residence, apostilled or legalized, if you have been residing in the last five years in a country different from your country of origin.

If you are the owner or a partner of an already existing Chilean company, you can add the following documentation (optional):
- Deed of incorporation of the company and any modifications.
- Certificate of Start of Activities from Chilean Tax Authority.

- Proof of payment of municipal patent.
Documents to submit to the Chilean Investment Agency
To be able to obtain a support letter from the Chilean Investment Agency, you need to apply for this letter first. This process is not trivial, and gathering all the required documents can take quite a lot of time.
The list of documents to provide to the investment agency varies a lot based on the subcategory of visa and the investment vehicle. For this reason, we do not detail every case and recommend contacting our local immigration expert, who can assist you.
Note
Documents issued abroad must be apostilled or legalized adequately by the Chilean consulate in the country of origin and by the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as stipulated in articles 345/345 bis of the Civil Procedure Code.

Yes. There are distinct subcategories of investor visas in Chile based on the investor's profile (private investor, company, employee of a foreign company). The process is the same, but the documents required by the Chilean investment agency are different.
You must apply for a temporary residence visa as an investor outside Chile. This process is only available outside Chile and cannot be conducted once you arrive in Chile as a tourist.

Yes. You can bring dependents or family members to Chile under your investor visa. The family members that you can include are your spouse or equivalent, children under 18 years old, children with disabilities, unmarried children under 24 years old who are (or will be) studying in Chile, and minors under your personal care or guardianship. The government of Chile has taken steps to promote foreign investment. Chile has two specific agencies within the Ministry of Economy. One is in charge of large foreign investors, called InvestChile. The other agency, called CORFO, supports production and innovation in general (not only for foreign investors). It has several programs that fund companies innovating or willing to set up in a Chilean region outside Santiago. The goal is to decentralize the country.

The law specifies that the investment must be for producing goods or services and must be equal to or greater than 500,000 USD (or equivalent in other currencies). Real estate investment, unless included in a larger project that produces goods or services, does not qualify.

Investment visa renewal / Permanent residency

Yes. It is possible to renew an investor visa in Chile when it expires. You must file your renewal application between 90 and 10 days before the visa expiration date. You will be required to file a letter from the investment agency. Make sure to plan to have time to obtain the documents.
Yes. You can apply for permanent residency in Chile after living on an investor visa. The necessary residency period to apply for permanent residency is 24 months.
