What is a medical visa in Chile?

A medical visa allows foreigners who need to come to Chile to undergo medical treatment for an extended period. This visa is for individuals undergoing medical treatments that need to be initiated or continued with institutional or private health providers registered with the Health Superintendency and located in Chile.

Warning

The medical visa is more restricted than other visa categories. In particular, this is one of the few temporary visa categories that does not allow you to apply for permanent residency.

Who can apply for a medical visa in Chile? Is the medical visa right for me?

Foreigners who can apply for a medical visa in Chile are those who are undergoing medical treatments that need to be initiated or continued with institutional or private health providers registered in the records of the Superintendence of Health and residing in Chile.

The visa application must be made outside Chile through the national immigration service online platform.

Who does not qualify for a medical visa?

The following categories of individuals cannot apply for a medical visa in Chile:

  • Foreigners who can not demonstrate that they have a disease that requires treatment in a medical institution located in Chile
  • Foreigners who intend to cure their disease in an institution not registered with the Superintendence of Health.
  • Foreigners already in Chile
  • Foreigners who cannot justify financial resources to pay for their stay and treatment in Chile.
Warning

Remember that you also must be able to prove that you can maintain yourself in Chile. Undertaking a medical treatment is insufficient to get approved if you can not demonstrate savings or recurring income.

The requirements to apply for a medical visa in Chile are:

  • undertaking a medical treatment that requires you to come or stay in Chile.
  • justifying that you have health insurance or savings to pay for the treatment.
  • having a passport valid for at least one year at the date of the application.

  • Background check of your country of origin, apostilled or legalized.
  • Background check of your country of residence, apostilled or legalized, if you have been residing in the last five years in a country different from your country of origin.

Specific documents for this visa

To apply for a medical visa in Chile, you need to submit the following documents:

  • Medical Certificate: Issued by the institution and physician responsible for the treatment, stating the need for care in Chile.
  • Other Medical Documents (optional): Other documents that provide information to prove the applicant's health condition.
  • Proof of financial support: You can prove it with any of the following documents: a work contract, recent salary statements, proof of VAT payments if you are an entrepreneur, or a support letter.
  • Proof that you can finance the treatment: health insurance or savings

Documents issued abroad must be apostilled or legalized adequately by the Chilean consulate in the country of origin and by the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as stipulated in articles 345/345 bis of the Civil Procedure Code.
